The age-old crop known to others as sweet potato, is a favourite among Kiwis. It was brought into New Zealand over 1,000 years ago and since then the islanders have shown great skills in cultivating and storing the potato. The Kumara can be typically found with a reddish outer skin skin and creamy white flesh however, there is also a gold-skinned variant which is sweeter than the red-skin Kumara.

 

The Kumara has been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-coagulant properties.

Sweet potato contains beta-carotene which is a good dietary antioxidant. The presence of carotenoids not only aids in maintaining eye health but also plays a protective role against prostate cancer.


They contain Vitamin D which is critical for our immune system and overall health.

Vitamin D is essentially a hormone and is primarily produced by the body upon being exposed to adequate sunlight. It helps regulate our energy levels, moods and helps to build healthy bones, heart, nerves, skin and teeth .

 

Contains Iron to supply our body with adequate energy

Helps with the production of white & red blood cells, resistance to stress and proper immune function. Iron also improves fertility for women and is an essential mineral during pregnancy.

 

It is a good source of magnesium

which is essential in making sure your muscles, heart, lungs and brain work well. It has been said that most of us are suffering from a deficit of this mineral in our body.

An important electrolyte that helps regulate heartbeat and nerve signals, for example regulating muscle contractions, reducing swelling as well as protecting and controlling the activity of our lungs and kidneys.

Sweet potato produces collagen which helps in maintaining the skin’s youthful elasticity and is essential in helping people cope with stress. It appears to also help protect our body against toxins that may be linked to cancer.

 

Almost fat free

Kumara can be consumed without much worry about the amount of fat stored in the product. We do not need to worry about processed Kumara chips that which boast a low fat content and can be served as a much healthier snack.

 

To make a long story short, Kumara is all around great! It’s jam-packed with stuff that are good for you, low in carbs and calories. If you are looking to eat more healthily and lose a few pounds, then Kumara should definitely be an essential part of your diet.
