How Did Proper Crisps Come About?

Sunshine in every bag !

At Proper Crisps, they believe in real food. After being tired of settling for over-processed, artificially-flavoured potato chips, they decided to make their own. In 2007, the founders of the brand travelled around the world in a quest to find out how to make a truly outstanding crisp.

On one of their travels around the USA, they came across a traditional crisp fryer, which is now the backbone of their process for making great crisps. Upon returning to New Zealand, the founders set about sourcing for the best South Island Agria potatoes in the land. They it found in Temuka, where a family who were just as passionate as they were and have been growing potatoes for three generations. Their explorations brought them to see many wonderful things especially some of the finest products from the Lake Grassmere salt flats. There they discovered the highest quality high-oleic sunflower oil as well as Marlborough sea salt.

In a small factory located in the rolling hills of the Upper Moutere, the founders went through countless attempts of their crisp recipe before settling on one that everyone was happy with. They decided on using "crisps" instead of "chips" to make the distinction between their handmade crisps and mass-produced chips.

Staying true to their core values, Proper Crisps products are always 100% natural with no compromises. Their entire artisan selection is gluten, dairy, MSG and GMO free. They're also vegan friendly!

Their potatoes are sorted by hand which are then cooked and hand stirred in small batched. Excess oil is then removed using a specially-designed centrifuge. The crisps are then inspected to meet Proper Crisps rigorous standards and sprinkled with a dash of all-natural flavours where they are finally packaged and delivered fresh to the market place.

Proper Crisps originally started with their Marlborough Sea Salt flavour and slowly expanded to add three more equally scrumptious and all-natural flavours. Reminded of an old French recipe, they were inspired to add hints of Rosemary and Thyme to their crisps. Later, after much thought, they decided to add Sweet Smoked Paprika to their range which was their take on the popular BBQ flavour. The Spanish-inspired crisps are flavoured with mature, ground, sweet bell peppers which have been naturally dried over hot smoked oak chips. Following that, they added on two more flavours namely Salt and Vinegar as well as Apple Cider Vinegar and Sea Salt for an added zing.

And that’s it! You know when you’re enjoying Proper Crisps you’re eating crisps that are made with a passion for real food.
